The Kamo Club Motorsport Section
For many years prior to 2008 a small group of Kamo Club members with a common interest in Motorsport would discuss recent events and organise informal trips away. In mid-2008 it was decided to formalise our passion and set up a formal Section within the Club.
A formation committee comprising Grant “Jenks” Jenkins, Warren “Nana” Leydon, Donald “Peddlecar” Garden and Paul “PJ” Swann consulted with Club management and, following a formal application process, the new Section was approved. The rest as they say, “is history”.
We currently have approx. 20 active Club members as Section members; however, it is very much a family friendly Section and we welcome participation in all our events and activities for the immediate family of the member.
Our Section organises trips away to a variety of events during a race calendar year, whether they be day trips or weekend/overnight stays. The funding for rental vans, accommodation subsidy and refreshments comes from earning raffle commission at the Kamo Club through the year. There was a 4 day trip to Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell in November 2017, 10 people went and all had a great time. Some of our members also did a trip to Australia in 2011 for the V8 Supercars on the Gold Coast, and we are currently looking at another trip to Aussie in 2019.
Additionally, a number of relaxed cruises are held each year with the prime one being the annual PJ Memorial Cruise, held early May, as a mark of respect for founding member PJ Swann, Cruise Convenor for many years, who sadly passed away in 2011.
The Section has also previously been involved in managing stages for the annual APRC International Rally of Whangarei. A huge undertaking providing not only marshal personnel for reconnaissance and rally days, but tasked with the full set up of the stage within the safety plan and breakdown of same. While a token payment is received for this, it is not considered to be a fundraising proposition but rather one of putting something back into our sport.
Our annual subscription is $5 per member, and we hold infrequent meetings through the year to discuss upcoming events and general Section business, with the AGM being held around August.
If you’d like to meet up with some of us and have a chat about joining our Section, please see us at the Motorsport Section table at the Kamo Club on Monday or Thursdays nights, or give one of the following members a call:
